Buddha Śākyamuni’s Enlightenment

Qinghai (Amdo), early 20th century

Śākyamuni is shown seated in meditation posture (vajrāsana) on a lotus throne upon a dais, encircled by a halo and a mandorla. He is wearing a monk’s garments. His right hand touches the ground (bhumisparśamudrā) calling the earth goddess to witness his enlightenment. His left hand holds the alms bowl in his lap. The Buddha’s figure is framed by a semi-circle of stylized greyish smoke clouds into which seven demigods (asuras) are placed. The asuras recall the distraction created by the demon Māra to prevent the Bodhisattva from achieving enlightenment. The surrounding landscape is made up by a lozenge-like pattern of grassy hills beneath soft-coloured heavenly clouds. Multi-coloured jewels and white elephant tusks are placed as offerings in front of the dais. To both sides of the throne three small figures in ancient Tibetan dress are depicted venerating the Buddha. A unique feature are the large, decorative pumpkin-shaped balls hanging from the throne beams on each side of the Buddha.
