Bhaiṣajyaguru, Master of Medicine and King of Lapis Lazuli Light, is commonly referred to as the “Medicine Buddha”. He has made twelve great vows as a bodhisattva to eliminate the suffering and afflictions of sentient beings. He became the Buddha of the eastern pure land of Vaiḍūryanirbhāsa upon attaining Buddhahood. The main deity is the blue-coloured Buddha Bhaiṣajyaguru who is seated in vajrāsana on a lotus throne and wears the red patchwork robes of a monk. His right hand holds the stem of the medicinal myrobalan plant, while his left hand holds a medicine bowl filled with fruits in his lap. Bhaiṣajyaguru is surrounded by seven small Buddha figures, all clad in monastic robes and differentiated by their hand gestures. Each Buddha cures a variety of illnesses and afflictions. One of them is Buddha Śākyamuni who appears at the bottom centre. Together they form the group of ‘Eight Medicine Buddhas’.
