After his demise, the founder of the Tibetan Gelug School Tsongkapa Lobzang Dragpa (Tsong kha pa blo bzang grags pa, 1357-1419), manifested himself at the request of his disciple Kedrup Geleg Pal Zangpo (Mkhas grub rje dge legs dpal bzang, 1385-1438) on several occasions in five different forms which are all depicted here. Hovering in the sky, Tsongkhapa appears seated leisurely on an elaborate lotus throne in the centre, behind him a blue cushion covered by a white scarf and a red cloth hanging over the gilded throne beams. He wears monastic garments and a yellow paṇḍita hat. His right hand shows the gesture of generosity, and the left the gesture of fearlessness, while holding the stems of the lotus flowers next to his shoulders on which his emblems, the sword and the book, are placed. In the clouds aside the throne, two standing bodhisattvas are holding parasol and victory banner, both auspicious symbols of protection and royalty. In the four corners his other manifestations are shown. In the upper left corner Tsongkhapa appears as Mañjuśrī seated on a lion and brandishing the wisdom-sword. In the upper right he is shown in his monastic robes seated in meditation with the hands in the dharma-teaching gesture. In the lower right corner, he appears as the mahāsiddha Dombi Heruka riding a tiger while brandishing a sword and holding a skull cup. In the lower left, he is seated in his monastic robes on a white elephant displaying the dharma-teaching gesture. The monk Kedrup is depicted in the bottom centre holding an offering towards Tsongkhapa with both hands up.
