Tsongkhapa as Mahāsiddha Dombi Heruka

Qinghai (Amdo), mid 20th century

Surrounded by clouds, the great reformer Tsongkhapa (1357-1419), founder of the Gelug school, appears in the guise of the Indian mahāsiddha Dombi Heruka riding atop a tiger. Wearing long hair adorned with a skull, he is clad in a simple loin-cloth and a meditation belt. His raised right hand brandishes a sword while his left holds a skull-cup in front of his chest. In the upper corners and the lower left, Indian mahāsiddhas appear in clouds while his disciple Kedrup Geleg Pal Zangpo (1385-1438) venerates him with an offering in the lower right corner.
