Vajrapāṇī is one of the earliest three protective bodhisattvas surrounding the Buddha. Mañjuśrī manifests the Buddhas’ wisdom, Avalokiteśvara represents the Buddhas’ compassion and Vajrapāṇī protects Buddha and manifests his power. The blue-black coloured Vajrapāṇī, the Vajra-Holder, is depicted in an active warrior posture on a lotus. Flames radiate from his body and a scarf swirls around his body. His wrathful face has a third vertical eye on the forehead, thick eyebrows and a wide opened mouth with fangs. He holds the vajra in his raised right hand, the left forms the threatening gesture in front of the chest. Regally ornamented, he wears a tiger skin loin-cloth and is decorated with coiling snakes. In the upper left corner appears Buddha Śākyamuni as does Buddha Amitābha to the right. In the lower corners Green Tārā is shown on the left, and the White Tārā to the right.
