The Wrathful Bodhisattva Vajrapāṇī

Qinghai (Amdo), early 20th century

The blue-black coloured Vajrapāṇī, the Vajra-Holder, is depicted in an active warrior posture on a lotus. Flames radiate from his body and a scarf swirls around his body. His wrathful face has a third vertical eye on the forehead, thick eyebrows and a wide opened mouth with fangs. He holds the vajra in his raised right hand and the left forms the threatening gesture in front of the chest. Regally ornamented, he wears a tiger skin loin-cloth and is decorated with coiling snakes. In the upper corners Gelug figures are shown, while next to Vajrapāṇī a standing Bodhisattva is depicted in three-quarter profile on either side.
