The Wrathful Bodhisattva Vajrapāṇī

Qinghai (Amdo), mid 20th century

The blue-black coloured Vajrapāṇī, the Vajra Holder, is depicted in an active warrior posture on a lotus. Flames radiate from his body and a scarf swirls around his body. His wrathful face has a third vertical eye on the forehead, thick eyebrows, and a wide opened mouth with fangs. He holds the vajra in his raised right hand, the left forms the threatening gesture in front of the chest. Regally ornamented, he wears a tiger skin loin-cloth and is decorated with coiling snakes. The founder of the Gelug school, Tsongkhapa, is depicted in the upper left corner, and on the opposite side a Tibetan layman in ancient robes, possibly Dromton. In the lower left corner Bodhisattva Mañjuśrī is shown seated on a lotus, and the four-armed Bodhisattva Ṣaḍākṣarī Lokeśvara to the right.
