Qinghai (Amdo), early 20th century

The corpulent Jambhala is the deity of wealth and prosperity who bestows financial abundance and the resources necessary to practice the dharma. He sits in a posture of ease upon a lotus base, with his right foot resting upon a white conch. He has a stern face and peering eyes, and is bejeweled and dressed like a bodhisattva. His right hand is stretched out and holds a golden vase with a jewel on top. His left hand holds a mongoose. Above him appears the white goddess Sarasvatī playing the vīṇā. In the upper corners two high-ranking Gelug lamas appear in the clouds. Two other manifestations of Jambhala are depicted in the lower corners. The White Jambhala riding a green dragon is shown on the left and the wrathful Black Jambhala in warrior stance to the right.
