Kubera, Lord of Riches

Qinghai (Amdo), mid 20th century
The dwarfish deity Kubera is the king of the yakṣa, associated with the North and the Himālayan mountain range. In this function, he is also the Lord of subterrestrial treasures and material wealth. The form in three-quarter profile depicted here comes close to early Indian images. White in colour, Kubera is short-legged, pot-bellied and carries a large, slightly transparent sack on his shoulders from which colourful jewels are dropping out. His head is covered by a white piece of cloth, and his countenance is stern with bulging eyes. He wears ornaments and a red loin-cloth while lifting his right foot to move forward. Two high-ranking Gelug lamas appear in clouds in the upper corners. Buddha Śākyamuni is shown in the lower left, and Buddha Bhaiṣajyaguru in the lower right corner.
