The Mountain Deity Amnye Machen

Qinghai (Amdo), mid 20th century

The sacred mountain range south-west of Rebgong in Tongren county is called Amnye Machen and was revered by Tibetans since pre-Buddhist times. The mountain range is home to the indigenous deity of Amdo, called Machen Pomra or Amnye Machen, and it is a famous pilgrimage site. Like other mountain gods, Amnye Machen is depicted as a warrior god in full armour riding a blue horse. In his right hand he holds a lance and in his left a long-life vase topped by a jewel. In the upper left corner appears Buddha Śākyamuni and in the upper right another Buddha. In the lower corner two armoured horsemen are advancing in opposite directions.
